2007The untold secret about discovery of India
Filed Under (Personal) by Manish on 21-09-2007
At the mention of Vasco da Gama the first thought that comes to mind is the image of the Portuguese traveler who discovered India. At least this has been believed for centuries. But now this age old fact has been challenged by a book “India’s Scientific Heritage”. The author Suresh Soni, with reference to the archaeologist Dr. Vishnu Sridhar Vakandkar, has mentioned in his book that Vasco da Gama did not discover India, instead he came to India following a Gujarati vaishya.
According to Dr. Vakandkar, Vasco da Gama has mentioned in his diary that on reaching Zanjibar (in Africa) he saw a ship thrice as huge as his. He followed this ship, named Chandan, and reached India.
Chandan belonged to a Gujarati vaishya who exported teak and spices from India in exchange for diamonds.
